Suomalainen ratsuväki Ruotsin ajalla (Finnish Cavalry in the Swedish Era) is a 790-page comprehensive work covering the full history of Finnish cavalry from about 1550 to 1809 — from the first Finnish cavalry troop formed under Gustav Vasa to the final disbanding of Swedish-era units during and after the Finnish War.
Two Levels
The book operates on two levels simultaneously:
-
All military campaigns in which Finnish cavalry participated — from the wars against Russia and Poland in the 16th century, through the great power wars of the 17th century (Thirty Years’ War, the three Northern Wars) and the wars of the 18th century (Great Northern War, the Hat and Cap wars), to the Finnish War of 1808–09.
-
Unit-by-unit reference, down to company level, for the entire period — who commanded each unit, what it did, where it served. This level includes detailed source citations.
Special Chapter
The Life Guard Dragoon Regiment (Henkirakuunain rykmentti) has its own dedicated chapter, reflecting its unique status in Finnish military history.
Companion Volume
This book is a companion to Suuri Pohjansota, iso viha ja suomalaiset (The Great Northern War, the Great Wrath and the Finns, 2001), which covers the major conflict of 1700–1721 in greater depth.
